About the event

If you have done one of Kirra-lea's workshops previously, or you are already using sand casting in your repetoire, then this is the class for you! In this one day workshop, Kirra-lea will be teaching more advanced techniques like resizing and adding findings into the sand mould, casting with multiple sprews, and also how to cast in place faceted and cabochon gemstones!

This workshop is specifically designed for more advanced creators who are interested in increasing their knowledge and skill in sand casting. You will leave the workshop inspired with new techniques to practice at home. Please note that the emphasis in this workshop will be on the sand casting process itself, there will be limited time available to clean up all your pieces during class however, so you will need access to a studio to finish off your castings at a later time.

Kirra-lea will provide 30g of sterling silver and a variety of synthetic stones with the option of buying faceted and cabochon sapphires in class. Sand casting faceted stones can be tricky, so it's best to start with the synthetic stones supplied before using real gemstones. An extensive array of objects will also be supplied to mould and cast, but you are also welcome to bring along your own hard objects for casting.

You also have the option of bringing your own precious metals and gemstones to add a more personal touch to the experience. Any gemstone that is 7.5 or higher on the Mohs hardness scale should be suitable for the cast in place process. The materials provided will allow you to make up to 3 pieces of jewellery. If you need more than 30g of silver there will be an option to purchase extra on the day.

What the day includes:

  • A whole day workshop from 10am – 5pm
  • Lunch, coffee, tea and snacks throughout the day
  • A range of synthetic and natural gemstones and 30g of silver
  • A clean, contemporary work space to create your jewellery pieces
  • A glass of champagne to celebrate at the end of the day!

What you will learn and create:

  • How to use faceted stones in sand casting
  • How to melt and pour precious metals into the mould
  • How to troubleshoot any casting issues

What you should wear and bring with you:

All you need to bring is yourself! Lunch, snacks, tea and coffee will be provided. All the tools and materials required for this workshop will also be supplied, but if you have your favourite hand tools feel free to bring them along.

Please dress appropriately: closed in shoes, long pants, hair tied back. Note that we are working with clay, so it can get a little messy. The classes are limited to 5 students to ensure a guided, attentive experience.
